CS 23 Sydney Australia

Post by Fyfe »

Hi, my names Chris and i've been looking to make a boat for about 5 years now. I have previously made a stitch and glue kayak but this was more to do with familiarizing myself with the boat building process. I've recently acquired some space to build which was the main factor stopping me from building before now.

I'm a Cabinetmaker during the day so have pretty reasonable wood working skills. The workshop I'm renting some space in belongs to an ex colleague that has his own business. Its great because i've got the use of his machinery and spray booth.

I'm really enjoying the progress of the boat so far and can totally understand what others have said about it becoming an addiction. So far I've built the strong back and frames and I'm currently up to 25 hrs. I'm going to be keeping a record of costs and hours through the project so if anybody is interested feel free to ask.

Your off to a great start. Is that a temporary transom frame?

Looking good, although I see some concerns
Change those casters, those are to light (don't ask me how I know) also I think your jig is to light, by head I believe it should be 2 x 7

The following may be premature remarks, but still want to bring them to your attention.

Laminate your transom before you put it up there.
Outer stringer looks like it has a curve on the bottom side towards the transom.
Transom jig is to light

Good luck with your build and welcome to the forum and virus :P

Thanks for the responses guys. I've been doing it all out of MDF and then i'll swap them for plywood when required. I don't know if this is a good way of going about it but it helps me get my head around the manufacture process without stuffing up plywood pieces.

Thanks for noticing the point about the stringer meeting the transom Peter. I put it on last night and couldn't work out what was going on with it. I'll check the drawings on monday but i may have marked out a measurement wrong when drawing the stringers.

The wheels are rated at 50kgs each and I have 10 which doesn't equate to quite 500kgs but close to it. I may look at swapping them over as after I flip the boat they might not be able to take it. The timber for the strongback was 90 x 35mm. I used it just to get started but will bulk it up pretty soon. Before I start skinning the frames.
