Re: Core Materials for Sale (Coosa and Nida)
Tom: I appreciate the words of encouragement, truly. I have done rebuilds in the past, and derive immense pleasure from them. This time my career is in a different place, such that last year I got three days off. Yes, that will slow at some point, but no reason to sit on materials until such time ar...

Core Materials for Sale (Coosa and Nida)
My project is on indefinite hold, if not possibly scrapped. Work has accelerated at an untenable pace, leaving no time for a rebuild of this magnitude. I pre-bought a large portion materials needed, including the core material listed below. I am located in Tampa, FL and will drive a reasonable dista...

Re: Rebuild: 27' Blackfin Sportsman
Lots of work! You have been busy. How did you make sure the core had good contact when laying it in the mold? Lots of weight. I intended to vacuum bag after laying down putty, but the sides of the mold had a small leak. After it was cured I went back with a sounding mallet and found a few small spo...

I started removing all of the remaining attachments on the transom: https://photos.smugmug.com/The-BOAT-Part-2/n-z4NfLs/The-BOAT-Part-2/i-xX8F6zN/L/e731849b/X3/20201122_135224-X3.jpg Cut out the stringers to make room for the core. Dry as a bone, and built like a brick outhouse! https://photos.smugm...

Re: Rebuild: 27' Blackfin Sportsman
Still making progress, but it doesn’t look like much yet. Loosened the cap toward the aft in order to gain access to the built in livewell, and so I could assess where to best cut the cap / liner. https://photos.smugmug.com/The-BOAT-Part-2/n-z4NfLs/The-BOAT-Part-2/i-HxWPCf5/0/95b95d07/L/20201122_123...

Re: Rebuild: 27' Blackfin Sportsman
Nice! Thank you! How did you do the edges in mould? I get the 4" tape, but how did the tape and the nidacore make contact well? I am envisioning margins, or did you mud that in woth thickened resin? Well the tape was put in before the first full layer of glass. The first full layer covered the...

Re: Rebuild: 27' Blackfin Sportsman
I finished my mold and laid up the hardtop. Apologies for no interim posts, but I will cover it all here. Materials are 1708 45deg, polyester, and 1” Nida. I waxed mold three times, sprayed three coats of PVA, and rolled gelcoat into the mold. I planned on painting with Awlgrip (or comparable), so I...

Re: Rebuild: 27' Blackfin Sportsman
So not the most exciting post, but the boat certainly looks much different. I took the hull over to a local soda blaster, and he did a fantastic job. They managed to get decades of bottom paint off, without blowing through the gelcoat. There were a few spots they got down to glass, but mainly in are...
