Re: Yet Another D4 Build
Intriguing option but I would be a little nervous buying a sail from someone who calls a lateen sail a "latin" sail. Anyway, my scrounging has paid off and I just picked up a used rig from an 9' MK Dinghy (built by Cape Cod Ship Building). It is a Bermudian headed (Marconi) sail with alumi...

Re: Frame Modification on FL 14
Based on Mr. Mertens's post, it appears there would be no problem moving frame # 5 (counting from front to back) forward 12" as it appears that would still leave the frame within 36" of the transom. You probably will need to put some additional support under the rear seat though. It does n...

Re: Yet Another D4 Build
After some long intervals of inactivity, the anticipation of a short cruise finally motivatied me to get this dinghy finished enough to be usable under oars. Here are a couple of photos of it tethered to the mother ship at a mooring. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c302/swheatley/D4001.jpg http://...

Re: Yet Another D4 Build
Things are progressing. Got the skeg glued on and covered with Dynel. Currently about 3/4 of the way through fairing the outside of the hull. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c302/swheatley/D4%20Build/D4012.jpg http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c302/swheatley/D4%20Build/D4013.jpg Also orderd some b...

Re: Yet Another D4 Build
Well, it turns out I am too busy in the spring, summer and fall to build boats. But now that the leaves are raked and the gutters are cleaned I have been able to make some more progress. I finished taping a few remaining seams and then glued in the stern quarter knees. Port: http://i30.photobucket.c...

Re: "Best" first sailboat??
Of the small sailboat plans on this site, my favorite is the Catboat 12 (C12). If I were to build it, however, I probably would step the mast further aft and give it a fractional sloop rig. There are photos in the builder galleries of a C12 with a standing lug mainsail and a small jib so it definite...

Re: Yet Another D4 Build
Thanks. The boat is being built to row and sail. Except for the bow transom, which is a piece of Meranti I had left over from another project, the hull is Okoume to keep weight down. Yes it was expensive but I plan to use this boat as a deckable tender for a 28' sloop so I need to keep it light. We ...

Yet Another D4 Build
Finally starting to glue up my hull. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c302/swheatley/D4Pram004.jpg http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c302/swheatley/D4Pram006.jpg http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c302/swheatley/D4Pram005.jpg I've customized the boat a little bit. I gave it a flared bow transom beca...

Re: d5 dingy
The complete covering of the boat with your marine epoxy resulted in a beautiful finish. Is this ok as the finish coat? No. Plain epoxy will react and discolor when exposed to sunlight. You must protect it with varnish, which is loaded with UV filters. The rudder hardware kit I purchased has an ite...
