I built my CC14 last summer and used it quite a bit. Mine is as close to stock as I could make it - no keel, skeg or runners - and I find it tracks just fine with a double paddle. The bottom does get scraped a bit, but that's the beauty of a workboat finish. I don't have much time invested in it, so...

Very nice! The finish on my CC14 is not as nice, but when I'm launching or taking out there is always someone who stops to ask me questions - even if there are fancier store-bought boats near by. Not only is it fun to paddle, it's also fun to enjoy the sense of accomplishment. There's just something...

I, too, use a single paddle in my tanden fiberglass canoe. I had never used a double paddle until I built my CC. I'm sold on the double paddle for solo trips. But I get very uncomfortable sitting on the bottom. I tried a cheap stadium seat (something like Lazlo's, but not nearly as nice) and found t...

Hey Ausie: Thanks for the pictures. The seat back looks very cool - nice job. I'm resisting something permanent like that because sometimes my bride paddles with me and I have to sit further back. I tried one of those fold up padded fabric sport seats, but it doesn't provide much support. Also, I ha...

Thanks for the comments. I haven't actually tried to tip my cheap canoe. I will try the next chance I get. This would probably increase my confidence in leaning the boat when using a single paddle. I don't have a seat in my canoe except for the one specified in the plan. I find it a bit uncomfortabl...

Yup, that makes sense. I'm most comfortable using a doublepaddle for the cheap canoe because it is a bit skittish when leaned. The Chenoa and the Hiawatha have a slightly wider beam. Would you recommend a conventional canoe paddle for them? And would you expect any difference in speed and turning co...

Cheap canoe, Chenoa, Hiawatha
Could someone comment on the performance characteristics and stability of the cheap canoe, the single chine chenoa and the double chine hiawatha? I love my cheap canoe. As far as I'm concerned it is plenty fast and stable. Building it was great fun. But of course now I need to build something else.....
