Re: Floatation foam calculation

That's OK, but extremely hard to figure out. You can't go by how many sheets of ply you use, because they are all cut down.
I would just weigh the boat whole and use that +10% or so as your number.

Re: Floatation foam calculation

Not really. Remember the wood has weight too. Then you add resin and glass onto it. Fillets don't float either, nor do outboards, cleats, fishfinders..... If plywood adds any buoyancy it is minimized by the other parts on a boat. Estimate your total weight, and fill your cavities. A half filled cavi...

Re: Houseboat

Nevermind, I just looked up a picture. It looks more like a flatbottom dory then a Garvey. I'd go with 3, atleast 1.5" high.

Re: Houseboat

For slow speed tracking they would need to be significantly deep. I'd say anything less then 1" wouldn't do much good at all. Being a Garvey hull it shouldn't have as bad an issue with tracking as a flat bottom barge. I'd probably do one on either side, and add a rudder set up to the outboard i...

Re: Best plywood from Lowe’s??

Just a FYI this thread is years old. And 0.75" for just a boat floor on a small craft is insanely heavy. Even on a larger craft I would use maybe 1/2" at most. 3/8" is enough in most cases if properly done and braced.

Re: FS17 from Kit Build

I pointed out the error years ago, and after some debate I think it has been fixed now. The clamping board followed the dimensions for a portable outboard, up to 30hp in most cases. My 60hp uses the universal mount pattern found on all larger outboards from 40hp and up. I'd have to go back in my not...

Re: Venting Fuel Locker

I have some insight into this from when I built my boat. It took me a long while to get an answer, as it is buried deep in the regs. That said, to be USCG compliant with a portable fuel tank, you must have 15 square inches of atmospheric venting for every square foot of compartment space. It also ne...

Re: Insurance for our boats

Hagerty will no longer insure our boats. They are only doing classic wood boats when I called.

I'm insured through Geico now. No hoops. I told them it's a custom FS17 model from Boat Builder Central. A few pics and done.

Re: Closed Cell Buoyancy Foam Test

I think the cure time might be the biggest issue here. Properly cured closed cell foam should not absorb moisture like a sponge. Water should only be able to penetrate the exposed cells, not wick its way through the structure. I've done similar tests with an other 2lbs foam and great stuff from Home...

Also here's a good video series about live-aboards and shantys. He's still making videos, but has 10 or so up right now.
