Kells 23 Strawler

I'm resurrecting a Kells 23 Coaster (shoal keel sailboat akin to Cal 22 and the like) as a displacement powerboat with a cuddy. The balsa core decks and interior wood have rotted, so I'm gutting it and starting from the bare hull. When complete, it will look something like the PG25 Cabin (above the ...

OD18 motor well width with tiller outboard

The motor well cutout on the transom is something like 2'8", does it have to be this wide? If using a tiller steered outboard, could this be narrower? This would give wider quarter seats and less water coming over the transom.

HMD19 vs HM19 at displacement speed

If you have a planing boat, like the HM19, and only operate it at displacement speed, how much less efficient is it than a boat that's designed for displacement speed? Is there a large difference in fuel economy or speed? Let's say I wanted to eventually get a 50 hp for the HM19, but for the time be...

Oh man, I don't know how I missed this thread, but that is a great looking boat! The small cuddy treatment on the panga is just perfect.

It seems from the plywood and epoxy (18 gal vs 30 gal) that the PG22 is much cheaper to build than the PG25. So, any chance you can do the same for the PG22?

What about a West Pointer 18? Stable, seaworthy, has tumblehome for hauling pots, would make good use of 50 hp.

It might be a challenge in stitch and glue, but maybe it would make a good candidate for a foam/composite hull?

If I can't lengthen the boat, then a 10% scale up will get me the longer rear cockpit I need. Probably a LOT more wood than simply lengthening the boat, but OK.

Yes, lengthen the boat. My thought was to continue the lines aft so that the stern will become a little narrower. I would not change the location of the sails, so I'm assuming the boat would sail pretty much as designed. I was asking about a displacement skiff a couple weeks ago, my feeling is that ...
