Re: 1988 HydraSports 2500 WA Vector

Original 1988 2 stroke transom was rated at 470 HP, but not the weight of modern 4 strokes.

Does the same methodology apply to the stringer connections with the 1700?

Fallguy, where you B? Your advice is always well respected as well.

Re: 1988 HydraSports 2500 WA Vector

Yes, will be leaving out skin intact and doing it from the inside. Right now, outer skin is 3/8 glass, Wood is 1 5/8”, and inner skin is 3/8” glass, total 2 3/8”. Is 1 3/4” 1088 Okoume with 7-8 layers of the 1700 reasonable from a strength perspective? “Tabbing” largest layer to smallest, assuming n...

Re: 1988 HydraSports 2500 WA Vector

So I’ve been doing alot more reading and based on the info in the link below and the transom rebuild thread, I feel alot of my questions have been answered. https://community.boatbuildercentral.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=66204 One thing I saw in the thread above is the reference to using 1700 for the...

Re: 1988 HydraSports 2500 WA Vector

So a few questions if someone can clarify 1. Assuming the 1 5/8” wood core. Use two pieces of 3/4” Okoume bonded directly to the outer skin with epoxy thickened with silica 2. Fill the gaps with epoxy thickened with wood flour maybe a little silica 3. Build fillets and then tab transom to gunwales a...

Re: 1988 HydraSports 2500 WA Vector

Brett, yup definitely a twin. Hard to believe there are two this close in Maryland. My batteries are the same except 1 starboard, 2 port. Still not 100% sure what I am going to fully do, but the I am replacing my single engine setup with a pair of twin used Yamahas 115s. Yamaha's Performance Bulleti...

Re: Please Clarify Transom Rebuild Tutorial

Thanks everyone, appreciate all the info and clarifications.I’m a person who questions discrepancies only for clarification and to be 100% sure. Give me the 1% margin and I’ll find a way to be wrong every time. That sketch just proves everything you need to know in life you learned in kindergarten👍😂...

Re: Please Clarify Transom Rebuild Tutorial

Yes, with respect to fiberglass, I am a 99% amateur but have done epoxy joints that have held for 15 years of abuse and get the point about sanding fillets versus working wet on wet.😳😂 The techniques and materials here have held their own!!! But the whole reason I asked was the posted tutorial here ...

Please Clarify Transom Rebuild Tutorial

Being a design engineer (civil) by trade I am always leary about deviating from what the designer specifies as has been repeated on this forum over and over. In the transom rebuild tutorial, it very clearly states to tab the cornerstone’s between the new transom, sides and bottom. This is then follo...

Awlgrip Color Card

Can anybody guess or provide a recommendation for a color to come close to the original gel coat on a 1988 Hydra Sports walkaround. Gel coat has the “beigey” tint to it that was common in that era. I am thinking something along the lines of the “Bertram White”, might get me close. Gel coat his in ov...

Re: 1988 HydraSports 2500 WA Vector

Thanks Tom and yes the 3500 dry weight was what I found and as best I can tell the wood work is all cosmetic. I found an original HP rating of 400 HP. Using a 1988 200 Johnson as a starting point, they weighed 450# each or 900 total. the Suzuki 150 is 522# and the 175 is 529# in the 25” configuratio...
