Re: Building an RB18

My grandson Brendan dropped by this evening to help. The more he helps the more he gets to drive it when it's launched! http://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/userpics/89217/normal_Brendan_wet_sanding.jpg He's wet sanding the third coat of two part poly paint. Just two more to go. http://gallery.bateau2....

Re: Countdown

My father in law who lives with us just spent 4 days in hospital with heart problems. Quite a few tests and evaluations to determine extent of the problem. He's 93 but in reasonably good shape. Still drives his own car. Turned out they had to do surgery and install a pacemaker. He's fine now. Total ...

Re: Advice needed on filling pinholes

The kayaks were built 10 years ago and have been outside winter and summer in the sun, rain and snow. No problems at all with putty or two part poly paint. The aircraft, both fiberglass and aluminum have survived 20 years of use and abuse without any problems related to spot putty. Both painted with...

Re: Advice needed on filling pinholes

Here's a picture of a small low spot I found after priming my RB18 hull. Filled with 3M spot putty. Let dry 1 hour. Took about 10 seconds of sanding with 220 paper. Defect is now undectectable by feeling with the tips of fingers and will not be visible after painting. Much easier than trying to fill...

Re: Advice needed on filling pinholes

I use 3M spot putty. Get it at any automotive supply company. It's designed to fill pinholes and minor body dents. Sands extremely well. I've used it on three kayaks and several airplanes.

Re: Building an RB18

Getting the hull faired and primed has been a longer task than I had imagined. There are still a couple little spots to be touched up before painting the bottom, but I am so sick of sanding that I had to prime it and be able to see something that looked like progress. Still have to finish fairing an...

Re: FS18 fairing filler needed?

I'm building an RB18 and can't imagine getting away with a few quarts of filler. I have blended my own and have used 4 gallons of microballons and a couple quarts of silica. Keel, chines, bow and transom have 4 layers of 12 oz cloth versus 1 on hull bottom and sides. If you want straight lines, no h...

RB18 Decking

I plan to use strips for my decking, similar to your jetboat prototype. The plans call for 6mm ply for deck panels. Is 6 mm ok for the strips or should it be thicker, say 8mm. Looking to cut strips on my CNC and incorporate a 3mm x 1.5mm deep recess on the edge for colored epoxy. This will allow the...

Re: Building an RB18

It's been more than a month since I had time to take pictures and post them. Most of my time has been spent on glassing the hull and fairing. I want a nice finish, so I have spent considerable time and materials on getting a good, smooth finish. Used a homemade fairing board and RA sander and then a...
