Re: Old outboard (15hp Johnson) rehab

I belive the death of the metal tank is a federal thing. Grounding requirements. Odd that plastic carries more charge potential but... who's letting science make the actual decisions here?

Re: transom cut out

You could splice a new piece(s) in there but you’ll need to remove some of the existing to make a lap joint. If that raises questions then, as OliverP said, I’d consider cutting the existing transom out and starting over. Keep in mind any repair will need to support the weight and thrust of whatever...

Re: RB16 new build KY 1st timer

I’m not a quickfair guy, but is it a two part epoxy product so it doesn’t cure until mixed. I would cover it between longer periods but if you are going to be making small batches you should be ok leaving it open while using. Just don’t use your mixing stick to dip more out. That will introduce cata...

the vac should be doing that...

more balloons and higher additive in the epoxy will help it suck less. Apply as little compound as possible as well.

Re: OB15 - seams and chines, what tape? And daily screw-up

The tape (not glass tape, but just tape) really is only there to prevent the glue from falling out. The glue shouldn't be runny enough to be dripping. add more wood flour to your mix. You only want to "prime" the wood surface with straig epoxy to ensure that the ply soaks up enough epoxy t...

Re: RB16 new build KY 1st timer

Glass will appear white, phenolic will be colored. I must have all phenolic. I figured out phenolic is what BBC puts in the fairing mix making it pink.

Great catch on that.

Re: RB16 new build KY 1st timer

It's been a while since I've bought any, but all my bags are blue, red and green (sizes). Only silica has been white. If yours are labled then go with that. The BBC site doesn't have a picture. I'll check with Ried/Jeff later today.

Re: OB15 - seams and chines, what tape? And daily screw-up

If I understand, you are trying to tape the "outside" then fill the gap of the seam. 1. I'm lazy 2. I like to use what I have on hand. 3. Seams are structural 4. Straight epoxy is less than ideal as you discovered. light layer of neat epoxy on teh wood eather side of the seam. dry wall pap...

Re: RB16 new build KY 1st timer

Recall that those are “technical specifications” as advised by manufacturers. Read some threads and you may find folks to inquire about shortened time. That said, making fainting mix is a handy skill. If you have the pink powder make a small batch. More powder to make a pastier consistency. For fill...

Re: RB16 new build KY 1st timer

I’m going by “technical specifications” because my username is red and folks assume I represent BBC (I don’t work for them as much as I volunteer to help here to ensure the forum stays free). When you mix different brands of epoxy you need absolute cure when switching. Aka no wet or green. So if you...
