Re: Paddles

I went for a paddle about for an hour yesterday afternoon; practicing some different strokes and maneuvering. The new paddle isn't that great. I think because I left the middle of the blade quite thick, it's shape acts a bit like a wing and sets up a turbulence at certain angles. You can feel a stro...

Re: Paddles

Very nice work on the paddle! 8) Have you considered glassing the blade? Glass would prevent the blade from ever cracking. I used 3 ounce surfboard cloth on my strip canoe and faired with clear epoxy. You can't see the glass, it's completely transparent. Thanks for the compliment. I did consider gl...

Re: Paddles

Thanks for the compliments all BYT, that is beautiful! How did you shape the shaft and handle? For the handle shape, I copied the shape of the grip of my other paddle. Cut the bulk off with a coping-saw then refined with a spokeshave, rasp and sandpaper. The shaft is tapered slightly finer towards t...

Re: HC12 22nd September 2017 Big Yellow Tractor

I don’t know. There’s something about the art of watercraft that is lost with these new molded boats. Not a “soul” thing but a connectedness. It that’s my personal feeling. I understand what you're saying but from a purely practical point of view, they are just more versatile. Don't get me wrong, I...

Re: HC12 22nd September 2017 Big Yellow Tractor

I’ll bite... Why was it a mistake? Because one of them was bloody lovely. Lighter than my ickle boat but three feet longer and a foot wider. Stable as a stable thing with stabilisers. Tracks beautifully, but when edged will spin like a top. Pretty too. It was the burgundy Novacraft Prospector. Just...

Re: HC12 22nd September 2017 Big Yellow Tractor

Went for a "Christmas" paddle today. 'twas really quite pleasant weather to start with then turned to drizzle and rain. Had a play in a couple of other canoes.. BIG mistake. Met a couple of blokes I did the clearance day with and some new faces. For lunch we put up a tarp and various gas, ...

Re: Paddles

Thanks chaps.

I went paddling today (pictures will be on my HC12 thread soon) and one of the guys had a quiver of demo paddles from http://www.downcreekpaddles.com/the-paddles/ for all to try

Now, they make my craftsmanship look like I am splitting sticks for kindling :-(
