Re: 82 handmade GRP hull
Since my project is on hold due to the cold climate I have not been here for a while to see what people are doing. Edgar is it? your project looks like a lot of work but I commend you on what I have seen. The demo is a ton of work and the transom grinding looks very nice. From my experience, listen ...

Re: 1984 Grady 242 Caribbean Transom Repair (+ other stuff)
Just an update.... didn't want people to think I abandoned my repair or this site. I do come and checkout what others are doing and continue to learn. Watching other's progress and results make me want to keep working. In September I had total hip replacement done. Sad to say it was the 3rd attempt ...

Re: 1984 Grady 242 Caribbean Transom Repair (+ other stuff)
That’s what I figured. Tall would mean more tabs connected to the transom which I thought would mean more support. And when I tab in the shelf to the stringer tops and the transom that would be kinda like a honeycomb (kinda-sorta in-a way). Heck, I figured if things were all connected with plywood a...

Re: 1984 Grady 242 Caribbean Transom Repair (+ other stuff)
The stringers would be taller than the old. Are you saying that would be a bad thing? You are making me think... would a tall stringer be less strong compared to a stringer that was say half it's height? To be honest, I figured taller would be better. I can use the port side which has stringer resid...

Re: 1984 Grady 242 Caribbean Transom Repair (+ other stuff)
Thanks Fallguy... I did find that pic. Unfortunately I think by the time I saw the post I had already tabbed in my stringer. Actually came in pretty good. I will follow your recommendation with the other side. https://i.imgur.com/xaYOJbZm.jpg Only a bubble or 2. those white spots on the hull edge is...

Re: 1984 Grady 242 Caribbean Transom Repair (+ other stuff)
Thanks Fallguy... I recall reading and also was told about the hard spots... that you didn't want the stringer to sit on the hull so when I cut the stringer I made the height a little smaller to give me the necessary gap between the stringer and the hull. What I was thinking of doing is cutting a po...

Re: 1984 Grady 242 Caribbean Transom Repair (+ other stuff)
STRINGER INSTALLATION Ok, I have looked around and read about tabbing in stringers but want to just be sure I do it right. This pic is taken from this site... https://i.imgur.com/zBEzKvvm.jpg I have read and I have been told that you keep the stringer off of the hull . Is there a recommended distan...

Re: 1984 Grady 242 Caribbean Transom Repair (+ other stuff)
This was 17 oz Biax, one on top of the other right after each other. I did see the second layer soak up some resin so I guess I did ok. Of course I wet out the second layer. My seams between the transom and the sides are building up with the 2 layers of tabs and then the overlap of my transom lamina...

Re: 1984 Grady 242 Caribbean Transom Repair (+ other stuff)
https://i.imgur.com/zgoFoIgm.jpg Picture of the transom tabbed in and 2 layers of 17oz biax to seal it up. I have to admit, fiberglassing is trickier than I thought... especially as a rookie who had an idea how it would go but never actually had done it (vertical laminating that is... with a tab el...

Re: 1984 Grady 242 Caribbean Transom Repair (+ other stuff)
Update.... don’t have enough 1708 so using my biax.
When laying up 2 layers you want to put the second layer over the first when it’s not fully cured... correct? And do you let it cure a little before you do layer 2 or... do you jump right in and put them down right after the other?
Thanks
