I'm not sure how small your "small boat" is. Mine was 14.5'. For a batten I used a 16' length of 7/16 x 1-5/8 clear pine from the box store. I might have found it in the mouldings section. Worked like a champ and I still have it.

The first test drive showed that the driver can't see the boat and trailer at all in the rear-view mirrors. It's too low for the central mirror and too skinny for the side mirrors. Many thanks! You can. That finish is care of a random orbital sander of the epoxy coat down to 150 grit, then seven coats of varnish. The first three coats get got sanded with 220 grit.
