TAFT Fiberglass Canoe Rebuild
A friend steered me to this free canoe in need of repair/refinish. Roughest area in pic near bow. A couple of lesser cracks elsewhere. Emblem is Taft of Annandale Minn. I’m thinking a good cleaning, sanding, crack and hole patching, fill exposed weave, EMC Quantum topcoat. Y’all think it’s worth it?...

Re: Texas scouter 19
A late welcome to the forum from a fellow Ga builder. You’ll need to get a Hull Identification Number (HIN) from Ga Department of Natural Resources before you can get it registered. Contact them and they will send out a DNR Game Warden to take a look at your boat, make sure your not trying to regist...

Re: LM18 SSI GA
Primer finish looks great. I’m a big fan of southern yellow pine too. I used it structurally (laminated ribs, hogg, keel, floorboards) in a 16’ glued lapstrake. It was a plan from a British fella, George Whitsock). In an email I mentioned the mahogany he specified was expensive around here. He repli...

Re: FS19 (-5%) in GA
Just had the first skier up behind this 90 hp powerhouse.. On a slalom Lyn got up on her first attempt. It took me 4 attempts after a 4 year pause after a torn and questionably healed meniscus. Plenty of power, my technique was off a little. Meniscus is thankfully still in tact. Lyn liked cruising a...

Re: FS19 (-5%) in GA
Just logged in after a months long hiatus. I did not try 20 companies but did try about 5. I took Progressive’s liability/medical/uninsured boaters offer. Also just renewed a liability/medical only with Geico on a previously built boat. They would not accept any new home built coverage. Hagarty will...

Re: LM18 SSI GA
I’ll put my second in for the Silver Tip Yacht Primer. It really goes on nicely. Haven’t seen you ask yet but I’ll also highly recommend EMC Quantum 99 topcoat. Considered a top side coating but EMC tech said constant immersion in fresh water is fine and so is short stints in salt. Mine’s been on a ...

Re: CCTXF20
This part is fun. Most of it was. Once you start laying down glass you’ll be glad when you get the last piece down. Filling weave and fairing were also enjoyable.

Marshall it was my first stitch and glue also. This forum and Jeff and Reid at BBC we’re quite helpful along the way. Enjoy your creative endeavor. Look up Dr Pete from your neck of the woods for a close to home build.

Re: Marshall's FS17
Temporary screws to keep all aligned until they are tabbed in place with epoxy putty (wood flour and resin). I believe they aren’t removed until after you flip the hull. Just don’t epoxy over the screws before you remove them. You should have the wotorwell sides attached to stringers, the last frame...
