Re: Cheap Canoe from Urethane sheets

From reading on the website, the foam is polystyrene. Similar to Styrofoam. Allen Actually, yes it seems to be... We just refer to it as urethane. Don't know why  Looking up, i found these: http://www.diabgroup.com/~/media/Files/Products/Core-material-pdf/H%20July%202013%20rev10%20SI.pdf vs. h...

Re: Cheap Canoe from Urethane sheets

Don't be scared, it will not sink. It will work fine but after a while, you will feel the skin separating from the foam, like blisters. It will not break but get worse over time. You may have a year or two of fun with it. I donated the prototype that we built (the one with blue insulation foam) to ...

I tried to look for this on the forums, i would gladly want to see what happened before i step into mine... But if it is sealed it would not sink straight, right? Now i'm getting scared :-)

Re: Cheap Canoe from Urethane sheets

Yes, it is easy but it will not last. Even with epoxy, the skin will separate from the core. It is not the epoxy bond that will fail but the foam will break very close to the skin. This is well know: PU has no shear strength. Search our web site and you will see that we did build a HC16 that way. W...

Re: Cheap Canoe from Urethane sheets

Here some more on the building process: The urethane sheets were 2500mm * 600mm * 20mm. So it took 4 sheets in total. I measured and cut one sheet that i then transferred to rest of the three sheets. I used just a carpet knife for cutting. I preassembled everything to shape and used urethane foam to...

Re: My FS14

Update; Did another trip nearby the island in that photo before last weekend; spent the night there with two other guys camping, and... The wind picked up, bad. 16-20 m/s on the sea and the three of us with all the gear couldn't get the boat up on plane even underway. During the night the anchor rop...

Re: My FS14

Hello! It certainly has been a while, but she is finally splashed! Great boat it turned out to be, not as fast as i expected but works great. With a 20HP 1975 Evinrude i get 35 KPH with two people and fishing gear... Really stable and planes smoothly. In chop it splashes a bit if not going full thro...
