Re: Boats that plane with 6hp?

Planing with 2 adults on 6hp takes a light and narrow boat. A buddy built what is basically a 1532 plywood jon boat. It weighs under 100lb hull only. Solo it goes about 18, 2 adults about 15, and 4 adults (avg 150-160lb) 11-12mph. My flivver, 8'x4' also runs 18mph solo but won't plane with 2 of thos...

Re: Free 9.9 hp outboard

9.9 25" high thrust remote....this needs to go on something awesome. I'm picturing a 22x4.5 semi-displacement camp cruiser for river exploration. Cozy cabin for two.

Re: Water surface roughness vs hull roughness vs boat speed

I have many hours operating small speed boats and can conclusively say they are all faster in a small ripple (say up to 6") than on glass smooth water. Up to a few mph different on faster boats. Your boat would likely be a little faster in both conditions if the bottom were smooth. There are ma...

Re: would a 2.5hp kicker be enough on a FS17

The 6hp suzuki (and 4hp) in 15" tiller is only 52lb.

I made a bracket for it to use as a kicker on the DE25. It moves along at 4-5mph by memory, prop-limited.

I also struggle with carb issues if it isn't run often enough.

Re: Best boat for running into chop/ head-sea comfortably?

It wants to be long (longer than the wave period for wind-driven steep waves), sharp entry, and level. So Cg forward or big tabs. Heavy helps too, which you won't find here among planing boats. 20kts is moving. GS28 probably has the best hull form and size, but I don't see that being comfortable at ...

Re: Boat Recommendation

Yes I made a kicker bracket and bought a 6hp. I think I posted results here. Carry it under v-berth. Haven’t used it in anger yet, just a test ride. Yes a filler piece works great for the bed. If I haven’t posted pics I can take some. Mine is a piece of coosa with glass, scrap from other projects. T...

Re: Boat Recommendation

I have posted measured weights for the DE25 in my journal thread. I tow it with a Ridgeline rated at 5000. I stick to 65 or less on flat highways, but it's about as much as a fwd based transmission can handle. The DE is not a "big" 25' boat, remember we are talking 115 or 140hp. For small ...

Re: DE23 or DE25 Cabin?

If I planned to take it to Alaska, when it was built, I would have raised the cockpit sole about 2 inches (almost no weight gain). I would enlarge the scuppers and add 2 more further forward. I would lash down a water tight storage (for light things) box in the cockpit (reducing the volume). I woul...

Re: GV11, 20HP, 6/2020, Andrew

Nice build, looks like a super utilitarian and capable skiff! Grocery getter, watersports, diving or taxi . I've been considering building a mini GV for my 6hp. It doesn't look to me so stern heavy at rest; I think the hull shape and shearline make it look bow high while running, but the parallel bu...

Re: FS18 OFFSHORE

This forum was at its best when Jacques and Joel were active on a near-daily basis. Some of the current voices are…less informative.

For 20hp and his needs I like the high L/B pangas that the OP originally asked for. They are just not on offer here.
