Re: 1957 Wagemaker Wolverine Restoration

The Jasco works great and will usually peel off one coat of paint at a time. Just be real careful not to get it on your skin, it will strip skin off too and burn the beejeezus out of you :help: And DO NOT get it in your eyes :!: Thank you for the warning. I read the can and purchased chemical resis...

Re: 1957 Wagemaker Wolverine Restoration

I picked up some Jasco paint remover and have been using it. I run a couple of fans (one being a squirrel cage type) to quickly move the fumes out of the workshop. So far this seems to be much less work than sanding and because of the lead I will use this on the outside of the boat as well. I have b...

Re: 1957 Wagemaker Wolverine Restoration

I restored an old little boat a few years ago that must have had 8 coats of lead paint on it. I used a paint stripper called Jasco and it did a fine job. You paint it on like a paste, let it sit about 20 minutes and scrape it off in sheets. One coat at a time. No problem with the epoxy bonding. No ...

Re: 1957 Wagemaker Wolverine Restoration

You can run a fan inside the boat for some better air movement. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when you start working with heat. This sounds like I could breathe in the lead more easily than by sanding. Don't organic filters only last a few hours? I will try this on the varnish but still ha...

Re: 1957 Wagemaker Wolverine Restoration

I've been wearing a good filter mask that covers my entire face, trying to keep everything out of my eyes and lungs. So far I've mostly been sanding the varnish off. I'm also learning that I like building better than restoring; this will probably be my only restoration. I guess that there are really...

Paint removal/covering

Wow! I can't believe that it's been over a year since I posted about the boat. It has been slow going, I've been super busy with church stuff but finding more time now for the boat. I found some rot behind the front seat cleats. That has been dug out and repaired. Now I'm getting into the painted po...

Re: 1957 Wagemaker Wolverine Restoration

Thanks, everyone. I'm excited. My best guess is that this will likely be a two year project, probably just as much work as building. I will keep you all posted but don't be surprised if I don't post much in the next couple of months, July and August are really busy and I may not get much time for th...

Re: 1957 Wagemaker Wolverine Restoration

It looks like they put Pettit copper on the bottom (I am just guessing by the pic)...I have that on mine, but it isn't really right for either boat. Thanks for the information. Is the Pettit copper something I need to be concerned about when it's time to sand it down for the repaint? I am leaning t...

Re: 1957 Wagemaker Wolverine Restoration

Thanks, Larry. I have long considered building a runabout, but when I saw this and got my wife's encouragement I had to go for an old wooden boat. Looking back at my C12 "Jimzee" I think I can handle this.
