Re: GT23

Epoxy has no UV protection. So, a trailered boat means the sun will chalk out the 'bottom' or hullsides as quick as the sun reflecting on it or hitting it can be... Once this happens; you have to sand to remove the white chalkiness..before anything new is applied If you go the following year for a w...

Re: DE 27.5

I tried to weigh my boat with weight sensors. It was a lot of work. Dry weight recorded was some number that was higher than I wanted and so was the crane weight. The problem is one of trust. If you want a good estimate; figure all the plywood bought less unused. Take all the epoxy weight and double...

Re: VG23 New Build

Thanks Hank and thanks Fallguy. I'm happy with how it is all going. Occasionally it is daunting to consider all the work that still needs doing, but things are at least seeming to move fast now. For the next few weeks I will have some time and can hopefully crack on and make some good progress with...

Re: GT23

I have never used a vac pump to remove air from manually mixed epoxy. fyi

If you experience bubbling after application; that will be caused by outgassing of the substrate and will decrease with subsequent layers.

epoxy cannot be the final finish

Re: 1988 Shoalwater 176 Rebuild

The only way to cut that is to do major reconstruction; so leave it. But it is a design flaw in the hull. If you ever experience prop blowout at top speed or inability to get to wot; you'll know the reason.. If you experience blowout; you might be able to deal with it by inching down; so a hydrauli...

Re: Foam sandwich plans

After Capeman replied, i realized my reply was poor. I will tell you and everyone here that I am a foam boat builder and most of the time I was building in foam; I dreamt about how much better it would have been to build in plywood. Hulls are formed and shaped in weeks versus months or years. Plywoo...

Re: GT23

Rolling epoxy is fine. You need to make sure not to roll after gelation. And it is best to work epoxy with a wet edge method. Means don't go back over it much.

Also, don't use 3/8" roller.. 1/8 - 1/4" max nap

Re: GT23

I have mixed over 300 gallons of epoxy.

Never used automatic mixing equipment; just a wood paint stirrer or tongue depresser and 1.5 - 2 minutes.
