Good question, I was thinking an explanation might be in order. You can look at the link followed by the next 5 or 6 picks. The net of the net is that I want to be able to keep the PK78 up by the seawall and carry it to the water, no matter where the tide happens to be. FL14 is heavy to drag and is ...

Joel/Jacques - comments?

On the PK78, I am going to use 6oz cloth for beach resistance on the bottom ply. Can I go to 4mm Okume there? Can you recommend a foam and fiberglass layup for the transom, seats and frames? Thanks How much weight can I save with this approach? If 60lbs is the design weight of the row version, can I...

170lbs, 7.5oz in and out! Holy cow! I thought mine was a tank. That thing is going to last forever.
I am going to do a PK78 now, and I am going for light this time.
A 3.5 will do just nice on the FL14.
Have any pics?

Featherweight PK78

I figured I would move these questions here since I have the plans. To save weight: - use Okoume - switch to 4 mm for the sides - pay attention to your fiberglass work. To save more weight: - use foam sandwich for the frames, seats and transoms. Since I am going to glass the bottom, can I use 4mm pl...

generally 6566 would be acceptable, but I dont know about its particular availability or quality today. For a non planing hull, you could even use exterior ply and meranti 6566 is going to be better quality and a better choice

Yes, those tubes look like a real time saver. I never really liked the plastic bag approach. This looks alot easier to make it clean. - where can you get those tubes? Seems they would be hard to reuse... - do they work with a regular caulk gun? - how much epoxy do they hold and how much time do you ...

Can I use 4mm on the sides with no glass?

I wouldnt mind using foam, but I need to how much weight I am going to save. Plus I need to know how thick and how much glass ....

Is the 4mm + 6oz on the hull not enough? Since I have to add glass to the bottom cant I back off the ply thickness?

Building a featherweight PK78

I want to build the lightest PK78 I can for rowing. I built and FL14 and its built with little regard to weight. I want to do the opposite here. Questions 1. I have to cover the bottom with glass because it will see alot of beach/shell action. I will also use graphite or Hbn. Can I go to 3/16" ...
