Re: MF14 - Minnesota

Sorry, I didn't measure the cant angle or thickness. Will do that next time I get my hands on that sunfish, but it'll be a few weeks. You probably can't go too wrong with TLAR. Now here's Step 23f in the Alcort instructions for assembling a wooden sunfish (found online): "The coaming bracket (#...

Re: MF14 - Minnesota

I have the same question, but alas quite a ways from needing the answer ... I measured a 1966 fiberglass Sunfish earlier this month. The coaming is 3" high at the centerline. "High" as in vertical height above the deck, not slant distance. 1.5" high out at the ends. The Star Clas...

Re: MF14 Daggerboard Slot

Ended up building the daggerboard slot with cleats 1-1/8" wide. Flanking them were 1/2" panels on each side. Then a 1/4" spacer panel on one side and a 1/8" spacer panel on the other side. Finally the 1/2" trunk sides. This all builds up to holding the trunk sides 2.5" ...

Re: Hybird MF14

I tackled trunk/bow stringer assembly. This is a slight departure from the build notes which would have me lay out the deck next. As you can see from the photos my garage shop doesn’t have a lot of extra room, so I’m doing as much as I can before erecting a big 4’x16’ worktable. Here I’ve cut cleats...

Re: Avoid obstacles to progress

Last weekend I visited the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. They have a Weekend Apprentice program in their boatbuilding shop. It caught my attention as they were carving spars for an Oughtred Acorn - about the same size as I'm contemplating for my Moonfish. During their break I asked the boatbuilder...

MF14 Daggerboard Slot

I'm getting ready to build the trunk assembly. The MF14 Moonfish drawings indicate cleats etc. to yield a daggerboard slot that is 1" wide before fiberglass. In other threads Jacques has said the Moonfish should work with a Sunfish daggerboard and rudder (but it wouldn't work the other way arou...

Re: Hybird MF14

The longitudinals are cut and trimmed. Bow and trunk sides on the left, aft stringers on the right. There are two trunk sides and two aft stringers - the pairs were cut stacked so that both sides of the boat would have the same mistakes. The boatbuilding literature calls this "symmetry". h...

Re: Hybird MF14

Here's a visible sign of progress - the frames are all cut and trimmed. https://gallery.bateau2.com/albums/userpics/91275/normal_007_Frames.jpg Lightening holes, ventilation holes, limber holes and drain holes will all be cut later, after I assemble the parts and see where the longitudinals intersec...

Re: MarineEpoxy Tropical Slow Cure Times?

The MF14 is a 14'5" craft. Or, at least, that's what my pile of plywood aspires to. :D

The build instructions say the deck goes on whole.

Thanks, Jeff!
