There isn't much benefit to making it so complicated. A simple through-hull fitting and flexible hose does the job. There is also not much benefit to putting a valve on it. I've had it both ways, and I found that I never closed the valve.

Eric, You probably hit it right with that last bit. If you've got the right prop and add pitch it is like putting on a slightly bigger prop (pitch wise). This give more theoretical "push" per rev and thus more speed. Since you might now be slightly over propped, this would be the cause of ...
