I stayed out of the skeg discussion, but fully agree with your decision.

I used pine with a piece of 1/8" aluminum "shoe" for the skeg on my dory.

The Super Skeeter is too narrow, and a tunnel will make it very unstable. The LM 18 was partially designed to allow a tunnel that the narrower FS 18 did not for that reason.
