I hope this is the right forum for this post. I've enjoyed reading so many other posts on here it has inspired me to build a boat with my son.
We live by a creek that feeds into the intracoastal in Jacksonville and enjoy everything it has to offer. We do a lot of fishing, kayaking and boating. I recently bought a FS18 from somebody and have really like fishing it with my son. The only problem is we have to trailer it to the boat ramp and my 12 year old son cannot put it in the water himself. We have enjoyed the boat so much we have decided to build a smaller boat he can use.
This will be our 2nd boat build but the first from a real design. We chose the FS12 because of its size and weight and that I already have a 5hp outboard. The goal is to have a boat we can dry launch into the creek that is safe, fun, and can be handled by my son.

I picked the wood up last week. We finished getting all the measurements drawn onto the plywood last night. My hope is to get everything thing cut out over the next few days. I ordered my epoxy and glass which should be delivered today. We are all in now, wish me luck!

The other boat looks nice and kid friendly. Build on and make sure he does the build more then you or atlest helps a lot. These boats get a personally from the builder... My boat is NUTS!!!

This will be a great thing to do with your son. As you go post pictures, ask questions as needed. Somebody will have already done it more than likely and will answer.

I have all the plywood cut out. I think it looks pretty good but I guess I won't know for sure until we start to assemble it. What is the best way to lay out the holes for the stitching?

Great project for you and your son. I like to drill the holes for the stitching on the panels next to each other, about every 6 inches where the panels are straight, and then drill the holes for the curved sections as you pull them together.

ctbeutel, your panels look great!! I fully agree with the guidance of Cape Man!!! Jeff

We got all the panels glued together. Using the roller and working quickly I was able to get them all primed with epoxy in one batch. The wood flour epoxy went a little slower but we still managed with a single batch. I'm going to let them dry overnight before attempting to move them. Next step will be the strong back and then we'll be taking a break for vacation.

For the rub rails should I copy the curve from the sides or rip straight sections with my table saw? I was thinking the table saw will give me a nice consistent edge but will the plywood flex enough to make the arc? Thanks, Chris.
