Pondering my next project, something pretty damn big.
Should I build, rebuild or buy new?
I’m wanting an offshore capable boat in the 27-32’ range.

I am a huge fan of the Bertrams. The only issue is they cost a fortune to run around in.Aripeka Angler wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 7:31 pm Pondering my next project, something pretty damn big.

You like fishing, so build a fishing boat or refurb a great one. I always look for the Bertrams.
This one might be small, but it is just gorgeous and I have been oggling it for awhile now. Gets bigger with ob bracket.

Not sure if any of you is familiar with this site https://www.copart.com/
These are either flood damage, salvage or damaged in some way. To get to the ones that doesn't require a dealers license click the "No license required" box.
For example:

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Re: Looking for advice
I would love to see an Abaco 23 being built, maybe stretch it 10% to an Abaco 25. Or maybe the Gulfstream 28. Those are 2 beautiful looking boats. Personally, I have always loved the DE25 but doubt it would be great offshore. I was thinking it would be great for the Chesapeake Bay though, which is what originally drew me to this site. Anyway, I would enjoy following a larger boat being built, best of luck.

Re: Looking for advice
With the price of new boats I would have to look at something else. To build a new boat in the 32 foot class I would guess you would have 4000 man hours in it. Maybe find something with good bones to rebuild? What size and speed are you thinking of?
You do know one of the best things is a good buddy with a nice boat

I think the 4000 hours is probably a good number; could be worse if you get away from s&g.Fuzz wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 9:48 pm With the price of new boats I would have to look at something else. Re: Looking for advice
With your skills and what seems to be a love of creating with your hands I would think buying would be ruled out. Only reason I can see buying is you are in a hurry to get offshore in a big boat for that you could just charter? That leaves just rebuild or build. If you buy something to rebuild would you be content to just rebuild parts that need rebuilding or will your mindset allow you to do that? Would you feel comfortable in a big boat offshore not knowing if the rest of the boat is as sound as what you did yourself? Or would you NEED to gut it to make sure you are in a sound, well built boat? Only you can answer that question. but wouldn't it be better to just start from ground up and build the boat you will be happy building, knowing it is well made and we can follow every step of the way and admire your skills!Aripeka Angler wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 7:31 pm Pondering my next project, something pretty damn big.
