In-line raw water strainer

Questions about boat repairs with our resins and fiberglass: hull patches, transoms and stringers, foam, rot etc.

In-line raw water strainer

Post by cape man »

I have a high speed pickup on the bottom of my OD 18 that brings in raw water to the bait well while underway, and an 800 gph pump to bring in water at rest. I installed an inline strainer/filter that catches things that might clog the impeller on the pump. The strainer itself has a metal screen, which unfortunately oxidizes over time. In 11 years I have replaced that screen at least 4 times, and the pump 3 times because the screen failed.

On a recent trip we ran aground a few times, and once again the screen had holes in it, some snails got jammed in the impeller, and the pump died.
I bought a new pump, but have replaced the screen with a piece of 1.25" PVC drain pipe which I cut slots in. It is then wrapped with nylon window screen which is glued to the pipe with hot glue.
We use similar techniques at work for fish tanks, so I know it should hold up.
Just thought I'd share...
