Questions about boat repairs with our resins and fiberglass: hull patches, transoms and stringers, foam, rot etc.

Are you dead set on an epoxy just for durability? What kind of service do you expect?

This stuff specifically mentions use on boats.

If you wanted to go more cost effective, you could neat-coat with epoxy and then use one of the one part epoxy garage floor coverings from the local home improvement store.

I am testing out the durability of some valspar porch and floor paint on my boat, so far so good. I have their non-skid on the sole. It is a little tough to clean, but the nonskid has a nice texture and is gentle on bare feet.

Unfortunately most people don't understand what happens when you rebuild the transom o a fiberglass boat, as far as moving the low point of the boat away, forward, from it's intended place.
Here is a link to where I explain the thought of the PVC pipe

Here is a link to where I show what is actual problem

Here is a link to a rebuild that shows the PVC pipe installation to keep a drain at the new low point of the boat

I didn't figure this out until after I rebuilt my Aquasport 170. I now usually have about 3/4" - 1" of water after I pull the garboard plug, even with the front jacked up.

One of the best marine epoxy coatings I've ever used is PC-11. It's particularly useful if you want to make emergency boat repairs while you're still on the water. Can stick to and bond to a variety of surfaces and materials.

Great point Rick.

Even on my new build, I was struggling a bit to ensure that the self-bailing transom drains would remain the low point after drilling/fairing/painting etc, and I really won't know how they work until the boat is further along and I get it I the water. They will definitely let out a lot of water, quickly, which is their first priority, but only time will tell how well they get rid of that last little bit.
There are only two seasons in Vermont: boating season, and boat-building season.

Completed Paul Butler 14' Clark Fork Drifter
