FS17 Build

I decided to build a boat. I heard it costs more to build one so it's the only way to go. I think the beer will be the most expensive part. Something I've always wanted to do and I don't have anybody to tell me no.

I received the plans and started today. I'll post pictures later. Made some supports on casters and got the strongback together. Just need to square it up! Can't find any plywood local so I'll be ordering it in the next couple days.

My plan is center console with a 50hp. I'm hoping I'll be done in 2 years.

I couldn't find any perfect 2x6s so I had to put a few supports in the middle to make sure it was 32" all the way down.

Good luck with your build, I shall follow it with interest. Judging by the prep work I see, I am sure it is going to be a quality build. The FS 17 interests me and I would possibly consider building one when I have completed my GV15 which is close to completion. The dreaded BBV virus is a wicked disease, it is accompanied by that social ill "boat porn" which I am sure most builders on this site have contracted.

Thanks Dave. Yes, all I think about day and night are boats. I plan on using it to run around the lake and do some bay fishing.

jacquesmm, you might be right. I have long arms so hopefully, that helps It's about 36" from the floor to the top of the saw horses.

Welcome to the club
One thing to point out is how high your strongback is. Add the height of the FS-17 from the sheer to the keel to what you have now and then think about working with heavy tools there. As it is now you are going to be working on the bottom at close to 6 foot in the air. But maybe you are 7 foot tall? What do I know Either way have fun as this is what it is all about. And ask lots of questions, with pictures of course, and you will receive lots of friendly and quality advise.

Make that 18". You'll appreciate that as soon as you put the first frame in place. You need access to all the stitches as you pull it together. And just getting the long panels in place will be much easier too.

How about cutting the largest frame, setting it up and see how you can reach the top?
