Love the saying on the longboard.............it fits very well
On the plus side things are looking really good :D
Thank you, and yes it was 100% sweat. I'm pretty allergic to epoxy dust so I have to gear up when I sand it.
It was probably close to 98F in the shop when I headed for the house. Not sure how hot it was in the Tyvek suit
This is the reason why I love to visit Alaska in the summer
I wrote the message on the longboard to keep me going when I want to quit

Hi Richard, nice job on "Bare Bones"
What's the manufacture of that sander, I think that is one of those must haves.

Thanks Brian!
The brand of the sander is GEM. The retail price with the dust shroud is about $600. You can get one without the shroud for $400 but I wouldn't go that route. It's one badass sander :D

Dang Richard, I want you on my side. That's true sweat equity. I wonder if I could even pick that sander up. I'm betting no one on the forum would be fool enough to stand within 10 feet of me if I had a hold of it and turned it on :D

I decided to go ahead and fabricate the skeg and install it. I picked a nice piece of African mahogany scrap that was left over from the brightwork on Hermine.

Image

I screwed the mahogany to the top of a spoil board. The object of this operation is to clean up the edges of a small board without risk of losing a finger. It also allows you to make the angle cut on the skeg.

Image

I sawed all four sides on the table saw, then used a rounding over bit to put a nice radius on the skeg.

Image

I shot the bottom of the boat with a laser in order to get the skeg installed perfectly straight.
I put a series of marks on the hull following the laser line.
Image

After I finished marking the hull, I installed the skeg with epoxy/wood flour mix along with four drops of hot glue to hold it in place. I went ahead and filleted the lower edge of the skeg and called it good enough for today. I'll put a layer of biaxial over it later.

Image

I hit the hull again with the longboard and applied another skim coat of quick fair.

Image

I'll sand it out this afternoon to see where I'm at...

Moving right along there AA. You make most of us look like slugs
Neat trick with the table saw. I am amazed at all the little tricks I pick up from this site. Now if this Cloof just just remember them when he needs to

 You crack me up :D
I've met you, are plenty sturdy enough to run the GEM sander. It's heavy, but you can control it with one finger...

I know, I also have forgot plenty of tricks I've learned over the years as well.
FWIW, I could have cut that skeg on my CNC router, but I wanted to do it the hard way on the table saw.
I figured maybe someone could learn a new trick from my post...

Great work and great documentation.
I'm glad you posted the table saw trick. Who has a CNC machine anyway?
