Primer will show up any places that aren't fully smooth, you may want to skip that step on the bottom!

Black graphite will show those spots x100 ... it's all in how you want it finished I guess.

I consider high build primer part of the fairing process. If you're not looking for perfection, then move on. If you don't want that black bottom to show every dip & skip that's left, then you may want to primer, guide coat, & sand some more.

I suggest you do a couple coats of primer to sort of protect the bottom if you scrape through the graphite and I have. :D I can see where I have scraped through. Dang rough concrete docks up here.

It may be the fact that I abhor painting, stink at it, that the primers suggested for use below the waterline are expensive and finicky, but I cant see how paint is going to protect the hull from scratching when an epoxy/graphite mix failed to do so. I also feel like epoxy/graphite will adhere better to the epoxy/compound on the bottom than it will to primer. In my mind, each layer added is an additional point of adhesion failure.

I still vote no primer.
