od16-step chine

Post by jdsgrog »

I have the plans for the od16. I've been reading on these forums that the od16 used to have step chines, or square chines, but they were changed because of chine tripping issues and ease of build. I was wondering if the step chine can still be built? If so, what would the dimensions for the chine panels be?

Nothing against the slanted chines, but I sort of like the unique style of the step chine.

There is no benefit to chine tripping  I'd trust the designer, he's tested the boat and made modifications based on seaworthiness.

The benefit was spray deflection but that was minor while the drawback, chine tripping, was a real problem.
For that reason, we do not propose the step chine anymore.

JDSgrog,
Agree with the above. I have the step chine and love it but you do have to watch on busy days wakes that can cause tripping.
There is no advantage to it. The OD is very stable as designed. Also recommend 40hp.

Sorry everyone, likely dumb question of the week, what is chine tripping? Do I need to worry about this adding a reverse chine to the upcoming PH18?

I understand about the slanted chine and its advantages. i just like the stylistic elements of the step chine and I know that I wouldn't go crazy with the boat. But I thought i'd just ask.

As for what chine tripping is, here's a discussion on this:

An exteme example would be the following video (about 1 minute and 15 secs into the video):
