FS17 outboard selection...again
FS17 outboard selection...again
Still many months away from a splash, but I'm considering options. If I go new I'm thinking ETEC 30 or 40hp four stroke.Good used outboards are crazy expensive these days! Will a 30etec get the job done?

Re: FS17 outboard selection...again
Hey!..I joined five years ago, but am just today putting my money and time where my mouth is!
It seems that just as many people start at 25 and want to go up ,as there are people who start at 40 (or 50) and want to go down.
I have to pick one!

Here is a video of Kurt's boat with a 4 stroke 60. (Just in case you find a great deal on a bigger motor and want to see how the trim looks )

Re: FS17 outboard selection...again
I rode in this FS17 in Texas a couple of years ago. It has a 50HP Tohatsu on it and I think it perfectly matches the boat. These motors are light, strong and reliable. About 212lbs. I was astonished at how hard this boat accelerated with the three of us in the boat, I think it would run mid to high 30s rigged like this and these motors are reasonably priced. The Yamaha would be my second choice for a boat like this, they're a little bit heavier.

Re: FS17 outboard selection...again
My boat's had both a 25 and 40 Yamaha 2 stroke, both mid 90's vintage. I would go with the 25 only for the most minimal version of the FS17; tiller steer and standard or low sheer. The boat is most comfortable to me at 18-22 kts. The 40 is perfect in that range; good economy and modest noise for a 2 stroke. Also handles a bigger load much better. I've got nothing bad to say about the 25, just not quite enough motor for this boat. And yes, used OB's sure are expensive......but new ones are a lot more.

Re: FS17 outboard selection...again
My exact thoughts, ETEC is a two stroke. I run a 60 E-tec on my OD-18 and am very happy with it. Wouldn't hesitate in buying another one, also wouldn't hesitate buying a yamaha, tohatsu or just about any other brand. But thats just my opinin. Buy what you want. As for what size on a FS17, I don't knowTRC886 wrote:Four stroke ETECRob Eades wrote:Still many months away from a splash, but I'm considering options. If I go new I'm thinking ETEC 30 or 40hp four stroke.Good used outboards are crazy expensive these days! Pretty sure he meant a 30 hp etec or a 40hp four stroke, as in 30hp two stroke or 40hp four stroke.
