Hey everyone,
I'm still having the same problem with the seams in the floor seperating. I sanded it down to wood and glass, reglued the seam and put on 2 layers of tape. It sat in the garage for 3 weeks while I faired it and painted it and the first day it was outside the rear seam failed again. This is the second time I have fix the same problem. The first repair I only used 1 layer of tape. That didn't work so I doubled it this time thinking it would be like a reverse butt joint. I don't know where to go from here. I'm thing about sanding it down to wood and laminating another 1/4 in. over the whole floor. Anybody have a better idea? I took some pics but it is kinda hard to see.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Willie

Re: FS 17 More floor problems
Is there a butt block under that joint Willie?

Not a plywood butt block. I joined it on a 1x3 pine block in the frame. I'll show you a pic.
You can see in the frame the 1x3, Don't know why it didn't glue down right.

PS Read you can't come to the meet. What's up? Hope everything is alright.

Re: FS 17 More floor problems
I don't see anything in your pictures, it's all grey.
Are we talking about a fiberglass splice in the sole panel that does not hold? Is it between floor frames?
I have never seen a fiberglass splice breaking. If something breaks, it is the plywood, never the splices.
Where does it happen? Where does it separate?

Re: FS 17 More floor problems
The pics are really hard to see. It failed this time on the rear seam on the port side. It failed on all the seams the last time.
The seams are on 1x3 pine blocks instead of plywood but I thought a double tape on the top would take the place of the butt block regardless.

Re: FS 17 More floor problems
Did you glue the 1x3 to the plywood sole or is the sole just sitting on it?
Did you use a bit of epoxy putty between the 2 plywood sole pieces?

Wow, I can't figure out how v-ing out the joint, gluing and tape didn't fix the problem
The joint at the 1x3 cleat or the cleat itself may be loose if it keeps cracking in the same spot.
I kind of thinking at this point you may have to bury some screws or dowels on both sides of the joint and re-tape to get it to lay still.

Re: FS 17 More floor problems
It should not fail.
If it failed, it means that not only the splices failed but also the glue between the 1x3 and the sole.
You could drill every 3 or 4", on each side of the seam and pour epoxy glue in the holes then tape again.
Or, cut a wide groove (1/2") through the crack and fill with epoxy.
The way to fix it without removing part of the sole is to create a good bond between the sole and the 1x3.
I still don't understand why it failed. There is fiberglass tape on each side plus what ever glass you put on the sole. The span between stringer cleats is 20", the seam is at about 12" from a floor frame. There should no flex at all. many boats are built that way.
In addition to that, you added a 1x3, it should be super strong.
