I correct myself...I kept looking at the picture and doubting my first impression. What threw me off to start was the size, but I now believe that was a VERY nice pompano not a permit.

I thought it was a pompano too, they are so close. but when 81 year old uncle johny says its a permit you just nod and agree lol, he's been guiding the river out of the same boat for 30+ years. 8) not saying he's right just saying you don't disagree haha

Count the spines in front of the dorsal fin. Also, note the spines in front of the anal fin as well as the fork of the tail. The permits body also forms a triangle under the dorsal fin. That’s my take on the id but I could be wrong...
I still believe it’s a permit. I bet it was tasty.

It looks like a permit to me, blunter nose and that shape of the back plus color . .

Any chance it’s neither pompano OR permit, but a jack?

definitely not a jack lol you won't see one of those in my fish box...

I'm 95% sure it was a pompano the only reason i said a permit was the color and size and my uncle john saying it was lol. but i caught 2 pomps the week before that had completely different colors that were 100% both pomps...
