Re: LM18 Madison Wi Building questions
I get it. I figured I was heavy on my main main lay up of the bottom, but I thought I did a good job on laying down the fairing, but I ran out. No big deal, I ordered more. After reading your thread about the quantities I estimated that at the rate I’m going I need to order another half a kit in epoxy and fairing or like you mention 55% more.
I post my latest pics to my build thread later tonight.
While I’m waiting for materials I’m thinking of starting the rub rail. I plan to use a off the shelf rubrail like the Tessilmare. How tall should I cut my strips? I think I read in somebodies post they went 2”, but I just want to confirm.
Thanks

Never mind on the question, I just found it on the plan. 3 ply of 6mm 1.5" width.

Re: LM18 Madison Wi Building questions
I budgeted around 130 gallons of epoxy and I am at 230.Cbuf wrote: ↑Mon Jul 08, 2019 1:40 pm Question I ordered the marine epoxy kit for the lm18, and I think the numbers might be off on the amounts needed. The kit has 8oz of blended filler. That wasnt enough for the first pass to cover the bottom and sides. My mix was the consistency of maple syrup thicker for the sides. I think the epoxy gallons could be off as well as I have used more than half of the 9 gallons.
It could be that I’m heavy on epoxy, but I have been scrapping at each lay with a 6 inch plastic knife, and my burn bucket is only about a quart. The burn bucket is where I dump left over epoxy, scrapings, and excess glue.
Anybody else building the lm with similar experiences?
Either way I just ordered a bunch more stuff.
Thanks

Re: LM18 Madison Wi Building questions
I'm finishing up my LM 18 and if built like the plans without customization it may be close BUT I probably used at least a whole gallon maybe two fairing my rounded chine option (not originally accounted for). With other stuff like hatches and gunnels and fairing and glassing decks and consoles etc. Etc. The stuff goes fast. I may be wrong (in scared to go back and check) but I think I'm 15 gallons in and just bought another 3 gallon kit. I sure hope that finishes it off. Your build is looking greatCbuf wrote: ↑Mon Jul 08, 2019 1:40 pm Question I ordered the marine epoxy kit for the lm18, and I think the numbers might be off on the amounts needed. Re: LM18 Madison Wi Building questions
Cbuf,
Go buy one of these from walmart for cutting your fiberglass. It's perfect and doesn't pull like scissors will from time to time. I kept a small 2x4 to cut against. Just lay the fiberglass on top and cut it with this cutter. I used it to split my long 12oz and it cuts through the tape like butter. And, it's less that $10 for a handy tool. I still have the same blade though they are replaceable.

Re: LM18 Madison Wi Building questions
I like that cutter. I think I'll pick one up.
New question.
I'm stuck on the run rail.
1. Does the deck sit inside the hull or on top?
2. Do you install the rub rail higher that the hull and sand/ plane it flat to the hull?
3. Can anybody point me to a post that shows a how to? I did a search but didn't come up with much.
Below is a pic of the options I think I have. Structurally I like number 4 the best, but I'm not sure.
Thanks

Re: LM18 Madison Wi Building questions
Please look at drawing # 320/9, it show how to assemble it. The cross section is clear, it is close to your #4 but with rounded edges.
