Spent a few weeks fairing the bottom and chine of the dory and getting her completely flat. Then she got her last coat of graphite and flipped her over for a while until I hit a rock and do some damage. The 3/8th inch plywood bottom has two layers of 17 oz biax on the inside and out so it should hold up pretty well to the beating expected to occur. The photos do not display the girth and volume of this boat. She is BIG (86 inch beam, 54 inch bottom, 18 feet long). I have put her into hibernation until the FS 18 is completed. I anticipate that she will be sleeping for 4-5 weeks and then the interior decking will begin.

Yep a drift boat that size is surprisingly big. I have been out with a buddy who had both a 14 foot and an 18 foot drift boat. He said that the larger boat was easier to row and handle which surprised me a bunch.

Very impressive and interesting build. What rivers are you planning to run?

I will initially use it as a multi day camping boat on Eastern rivers and then head West to the Colorado, Dolores, Green, etcetera for white water. My last drift boat/dory was 17 feet and turned on a dime. Very responsive design.

Can't wait to see photos/videos of that ship in action, looking great!

Edit:

Just noticed what I think are skateboard wheels on your driftboat trailer for loading, genius!

Back to work on the dory. I will be fairing the interior compartments for some time prior to deck installation. Most of the progress looks the same so here is coat number two.

Well into getting the decking fitted and fiberglassed. The puzzle is coming together. Now I have to limber up to get under the decks for sanding, fillets and tape. Made a self bailing fiberglass drain tube (12 oz biax and 10 oz cloth) from gift wrap tubes and paper. Turned out nicer than imagined. This will go from the oarsman footwell through the outside port hull for self bailing drainage (2 inch diameter and 4.5 inches tall).

Last night I caught a TV special on a guy who rowed the Grand Canyon, albeit in an inflatable, at the age of 89, which is the record. He's a lifelong but almost unknown crazy adventurer by the name of Dick Griffith. Holy Moly.

That's a great idea, far better bond than PVC I would think.
