Phantom 16 Bulkhead D Alteration

Post by SkinnyJim »

I am building a Phantom 16 and would like to make it with a tiller outboard instead of a center console. Would it be ok to cut bulkhead D like Bulkhead C, so the floor/sole would extend further rearward stopping at Bulkhead E instead of D? Bulkhead E and the transom would be unchanged. This would give more interior floor space and accommodate a tiller setup better. I plan on installing motor well sides like in the "Transom and Motor well Details" tutorial, with 12 oz bias fiberglass tape the top deck to the sides.

It has been done, we had pictures of a tiller PH16 on the site years ago.
I recommend a tiller extension, the weight distribution will be better.
If you want, you can remove parts of bulkhead D but you must keep bulkhead E.
For D, keep the floor frame (under the sole) and keep the small uprights under the side decks. That will give you the very large cockpit you want.

Really nice! Where'd you get those stands for the portable chairs? Or am I not seeing them right?

Thank you everyone!

Dougster, you are seeing the stand correctly. The rear two seats are moveable. I did that so the space can be adjustable depending what we were using it for that day. I live just outside Portland, OR. The stands are pretty common around here in the NW and can be bought at multiple places. Depending if they are on sale or not, they run between $90-$120 ea. Here is a better picture of the base.

The only thing I didn't anticipate about the moveable chairs, is they want to tip backward a bit when getting up on plane. But this boat with a 50 HP outboard gets up on plane pretty darn quick. Also a tiller extension and standing when driving will solve that issue too.

I'll get some more pictures next time I take it out and post them.
