Planning a new boat can be great fun.

Post by AlScal »

Planning a new boat can be great fun.
Following the thread “And the planning begins!”
Another build seems to be in my future.
After thousands of miles on my last boat and my increasing age, I better understand what I want my next one to do. Things I wanted were not as important as I thought.
My current boat cruises at 400 miles per day but I never found myself enjoying that speed. When I first built it was fun to race around but soon I felt like I was pushing a little too much especially at night. I often solo and sail with one other. At 10 knots stepping away to refill a coffee feels reasonable, but at 17 not so comfortable especially at night.
I want one cabin two heads and a lots of pipe berths.
Cruising Speed: S/L ratio 1.0 with 2 hp/ton
Full speed S/L ratio 1.32 with 4 hp/ton at flank
Also I am thinking mono hull, the current boat is a tri.

Curious what the current boat is? 400 miles is a long way!

Are you still wanting to go 10kt at S/L 1.3? So we're talking about a 55-60' boat?

I've collected a bunch of published data for LDL cruisers up in the S/L 2-3 (or even 4) range, but this is well out of that experience. And I think most of this message board.

The sleek looking triamaran you uploaded a picture of yours? you should show some more pictures in and out, it looks pretty slick.

You are thinking sails or just motor?

That sun shade in the first photo is interesting - how is it mounted?

4mm dyneema stays - The frame is light which keeps the momentum down. It stays put even in big seas. The post is a hollow wooden mast, sometime used as a ladder get higher to help see into the water. On the new boat I am thinking about using carbon tubes for the uprights and frame. It will cover much of the cockpit and carry some solar panels as well as being part of the hand rails. but haven't worked it out.

High on my list is the engine choose, I like the Isuzu UM4BG1Z . This is a simple engine, common in this area. The hard part is to have enough load on the engine at cruising speed while still being able to reach full speed at full load. Has anyone used this engine? http://ies-isuzu.co.jp/en/marine/pdf/UM4BG1Z.pdf
