I know this topic has been covered but I'm having trouble coming up with the right search combination to get usable results.
What is working best for people for reinforcing hatch lids? My deck will 9mm okuome and my plan is to cut the hatch lids from the deck itself. I think I want to reinforce them and my thoughts are either with a 1/2" frame made of 9mm ply or just a doubler of 9mm ply that comes to within an inch or so of the edge of the lid. I'll have 4 lids, rough measurements are
1@ 11X22(bow/anchor)
1@ 22X22(forward)
2@10X24(aft deck sides)
Thanks,
Jeff

I don't trust walkin on 9mm ply; so double
6mm broke for us under 11" spans; I don't see how 9mm is that much more enough

Re: Hatch lid reinforcement
I doubled mine to within a 1/2" or so of the gutter edge. My front large hatch is 9mm, with a 9mm backing and obviously glassed on both sides. You can dance on it.
Built: 15ft Skiff, 16ft Skiff, Modified Cheap Canoe, and an FS17.

6oz woven is what I used.

Re: Hatch lid reinforcement
Appears that your hatch doesn't latch closed, is that correct? This was another question I have: do I need to add dogs or can I just let gravity hold it closed. My hatches will be wet and was just going to cut a finger-hole for opening.

Re: Hatch lid reinforcement
Right now it just has a simple stainless pull tab, but if I need I can easily add a compression latch later on. The gutters are wide and deep, but it is a semi dry storage so if I get a few drips its no big deal.
