I was hoping for first splash of 2021 but Silentneko beat me by 6 days.

I still have a little bit of finishing off to do as far as fixing the motor cowling, sorting out anchor, ropes, etc. but I got impatient so took her out for a blat yesterday. I was on my own so no action photos or video.

It floats - good first sign.




Looking forward you can't tell I am on the plane at full throttle.


Then looking aft you see the other side of the story.


Overall I'm happy. It is a bit slow up on to the plane but I think having the motor professionally tuned will fix that.

Typically, slow to plane is a prop issue, but you may trade some top end for a pitch change.

Hi Fallguy. When I first gave it the biscuit it planed ok but once the engine warmed up a bit more it became more sluggish. It also won't idle once warm.

I fully disassembled (including mixture screws, jets, etc), cleaned and replaced all seals in the carb so the original mixture settings have been lost. I think that when I tried to tune it in a bucket of water I can't have let it get warm enough so the settings are wrong once the engine is warm. Too rich going by the amount of 2 stroke blue smoke. Doing it in a bucket meant I only tuned in neutral and couldn't check the timing at full throttle in gear. I think that if take it down to someone that knows what they are doing and has a proper tank to run it in to get it tuned properly then it will gain a little power and fix the issue.

It is a 1978 Mercury 110 9.8. According to the parts list the standard prop is 8 3/4" diameter, 7" pitch 3 blades and I am fairly sure this is what is on it. Online all the prop places only have data for 1986 or 2007 and newer engines so a lot harder to tell if I can get the correct unit. I think getting it running properly first should be my priority before I start looking into props more.

MikeyGnz using my prop sources I found a new prop for your 1978 motor that is 9" diameter x 7" pitch. The diameter and pitch is normally on the barrel of the prop. So you may be able to find it on your old prop. The 9 x 7 works with specs for the Merc specs for the 110 9.8HP that I found. I have a lot of resources as I prop a lot of the guys boat on here. If you find that your prop is 8.75 x 7 that is fine also. But first get your problems with your motor fixed first. There is probably nothing wrong with your prop.

If you have a Merc dealer near you I would take it to him. I know 2 strokes are pretty simple but sounds like you are at your wits ends.

Hi Tom

I was planning on taking it to an outboard place, just deciding if I should go to Mercury or a small outboard specialist. With the markup they put on parts I will replace the plugs, starter rope, etc. myself first.

I have the full workshop manual so I'm happy with float height settings, etc. I just need the mixture and timing done. I'm tempted to have another go myself down at the river with boat on the trailer, there are only 1 screw for mixture, 2 screws for throttle stops and 2 screws for timing pick-up so can't be too hard. The main problem is finding somewhere I can sit and run the engine up to temperature and wide open throttle without getting in peoples way.
