The “Must haves” list

Post by The Chironex »

So I’ll be ordering my kit here in the next month or so. Going with either the FS17 or the OD16. More so leaning towards the OD16 currently. It’ll be my first build so I’m wanting to get everything sorted and bought before hand for the most part.

So I’ve come to to you folks and I ask...

“What are some must have tools or tricks I should plan to get/learn up on before I get started?”

I’ve got some woodworking experience so I do have quite a few tools but I know there are a few I don’t have. Granted I know, per build plans, you don’t need more than some basic tools and clamps. But I’d like to make my life easier if at all possible.

Thanks in advance!

- Zac

I think many of us on this list, except for one notable contributor whose answer to every question is "rum," a very useful thing to have is the multi-tool. I'm sure you have the standard sanders but I would also recommend a long board. Other than those, and more important than the rest, is patience.

Dust collection on as many of your tools as possible.

A decent vacuum/dust collector to hook them to.

Assuming you have saws and sanders and such, one of the oscillating multi tools is indispensable.

Some sort of nonstick palette for putting your mixed filler on during application is helpful.

A japanese dozuki saw is pretty handy, as is a Shinto saw rasp.

When is “rum” NOT the right answer?

The S. O. B. tool is very useful. If you can tolerate them them you will find it the single most useful then next to...

Disposable gloves. Buy a 500ct box now and get used to wearing them.
My already completed 'Lil Bit'. A Martens Goosen V12 set up to sail me to the fishing holes.
Currently working on making a Helms 24 our coastal cruiser.

And cleaning vinigar for the rest of your body that you covered in epoxy while wearing the gloves......

Rum is magic. Hot buttered rum let me sleep in comfort last two nights with an extremely sore/raw throat. Woke up this morning and the pain is gone.

best shop vac you can buy

oscillating tool with carbide head

metal trowels

wood tongue depressors better than the ones I got on Amazon that break when looked at

lots of wood stir sticks, tongue depressers hurt fingers cause you can't grip them with a full mitt

sandpaper (like 1000 sheets of 60 grit so far)

festool quarter sheet sander

laser on tripod

empire level digital with audio feedback

plumb bob

cordless screwdriver

hot glue gun

washers epoxied to a stick for fillets
My boat build is here -------->
