Fiberglass cloth and checking?

Post by LOW277 »

What is considered the minimum weight of fiberglass cloth to prevent checking on a vertical surface above the water. Plywood is exterior grade pine BC with the B side to be covered with the cloth and resin. Light colored paint, probably silver. Used in northern Minnesota if it makes any difference.

Also what is the correct type, woven or biaxial cloth?

Thanks

For BC pine you will need a heavier weight of glass, that type of wood is probably the most likely (guaranteed  ) to check. I would cover it with 10 oz, 6 oz may not be enough.

So now you need to consider the extra cost of wettign out 10 oz cloth (cost in glass and epoxy), not to mention the weight.

Is there not something a little better you can find?

Thanks Shine!

Where I am at there is not a lot of choices. I could order it from you, but my application for this is not a boat but a ice fishing shelter. I am a little hesitant to go into details because I do not know if it is in keeping with the forum. ( probably not a lot of ice fisherman here)

I would be more than willing to expand on exactly what I am doing and even trying to provide pictures but I would like your ok first?

I am getting ready to order more epoxy and cloth very soon.

Thanks

Low

Oh, well in that case I think your fine. A little bit of checking on an ice shelter seems OK :)

I've read a lot about checking and preventing it with fiberglass cloth. My question is, would "hot coating" work too? NOT straight "neat" epoxy, I'm talking silica and epoxy in a snot like consistence (for lack of a better term.) I'm guess the total hot coat thickness would be about a 1/8 total. Anyone have any knowledge/experience with this?

some filler in the epoxy will be better than straight epoxy, but not nearly as good as a cloth

Any thickness of cloth will be better than straight or filled epoxy.

use glass, ESPECIALLY since you're using "exterior" plywood. Here's three layers of epoxy, two coats of epoxy primer and two coats of paint on top of exterior grade plywood after two summers:

Do the job right and do it once, don't let your boat end up like this;

I agree with Shine. I took my OD18 out last weekend. After cleaning it up I found some small "checking" on one side of my front deck. I had covered it with 6 oz. I will be ordering some 10oz. soon. The boat is now 7 years old. On that note "Happy New Years" to everyone on this site. John
