Prepping to fill the weave with System 3?

Post by ddesilva »

Morning all,

as of 9pm last night the RB14 project hull exterior is now glassed.

About to move on to fairing. Being from the old West System school I'm somewhat hesitant to simply apply quick fair right on top...even though I know the System 3 resin/hardener included with the kit are supposed to be of the new non blushing breed.

So my question is this - after knocking off any high spots/binding thread - should I do anything further for best adhesion?

EG light scuff sand, wash with soap/warm water?

Thanks,
Darren

The most important point is to wait for the WEST system resin to cure completely.
I would say 2 or 3 days.
After that, light sanding and wash the dust off with a wet rag. Let dry and apply QuickFair.

QuickFair is far superior to any WEST system putty, you will like it.

Sorry if I was not clear...cloth was done with system 3 resin/slow hardeners.

Am I ok to light sand and start fairing later today??

Thanks,
Darren

Yes, all products in the Silver Tip line are compatible.

Thanks. Should I be wetting cured glass with resin first before spreading quick fair?

It would dilute the QuickFair and it would roll under the putty knife.

One thing to consider is filling the weave with epoxy and the fairing additive. I've used a lot of quickfair and after a year or so it shrinks and exposes the weave. I have three boats like this and wish I would have used the quickfair to do small areas, the boats would look better.

OK, that may be what Ddesilva asked.

I work that way too.
Before the QuickFair application, I apply a first pass of resin with blended filler to fill the weave and to fair the low spots.
Let it cure, sand and then switch to QuickFair.
The blended filler is not as easy to work with than QuickFair but cost less.
If that was the question, then yes, we apply resin before QuickFair but it is a slurry made from resin and blended filler and we let it cure and fair it before switching to QuickFair.
You can see that technique in almost all our tutorials.

Thanks for elaborating on this.
