Okay. I want to build a couple of nice looking doors that can just be removed and set aside. I think I need 4 of them. Two will be in the shower, so they need to hold back water. No UV concerns. One or two are outside; need uv stable panels.
I think it would be rather easy to come up with a plan for them.
Anyone ever build anything like these? I want to build them without the fancy latches for the inside ones.
I know that I can buy hdpe plastic sheet in 1/2" for the backers.

Re: Starboard or HDPE doors
starboard or seaboard, both will work.
We use both a LOT. Mostly vet clinics or outdoor kitchens. Seaboard cabinets...
Tell me what size of material you want and color and I’ll send it to you for cost.
I’ll cnc it for you if you want me to.
We call that system tilt, lift and lock...

Re: Starboard or HDPE doors
I mostly need to build the backer frames. In the shower, I can use the panel cutouts for the main doors.
I want to put a seal on all of them.
Not sure how that works.
Say I get 1/4" rubber oring stock.
I build the backer and mount the oring 50% in and then it sticks up an 1/8" and pushes my panel proud unless I rabbet the landing a bit..
For an access panel inside the shower; it has to not leak.

Re: Starboard or HDPE doors
The starboard or seaboard is 100% impervious to sunlight, water, mold and everything short of a nuclear event.
It’s ez to groove seaboard or starboard for an o-ring with a core box bit.
I’m not sure how to hold an o-ring in a core box slot. Should be a skill easy to figure out.
We pay wholesale $250 per sheet for 3/4“x54”x96” of seaboard.
Same price for starboard only it’s 48” wide.
It’s basically sold by the pound so the 1/2” seaboard is about $170 per full sheet.
You don’t need a full sheet though.

AA, how do these materials hold up as cabinet doors? Any inclination to sag? Similar to warp like plywood, but caused by gravity rather than movement?
I know it's tough material, but have always wondered about stability.

Very good question, you must have good experience with hdpe material.Dan_Smullen wrote: ↑Tue Mar 24, 2020 8:06 pm AA, how do these materials hold up as cabinet doors? Any inclination to sag? Similar to warp like plywood, but caused by gravity rather than movement?
I know it's tough material, but have always wondered about stability.
A typical base cabinet unit must be constructed with 3/4” material.
We build nothing wider than 30-34”.
The cabinet components are all blind dadoed, drilled, countersunk and screwed together with 1-1/2” stainless steel screws.
Cabinet doors all all hung on multiple stainless steel euro or institutional hinges.
Multiple inline hinges tend to coax the starboard doors to stay straight, they are a little flexible.
Tall doors are also coaxed to stay straight with magnetic catches on both bottom and top.
When possible, we will screw a valance of starboard behind the cabinet doors under longer assemblies to prevent sag.
Drawer slides are also stainless steel.
We use zero wood when we build starboard cabinets. They last forever lol...
Here’s a pullout drawer...

I used starboard it's a very clean product to work with but for a amateur like me not the easiest product, takes some time to get a hang on

Good stuff Peter. You’re no amateur. Beautiful work.
Yes, piano hinge will also fight the flex of the material when using it for a door.
Edit- I have a starboard lid with piano hinge on my livewell. I put it on Red Alert in 2007. Still looks new.

Yeah that was something I got to get used to, driving a screw in it without drilling won't work, not even the smallest screw. They all will move the material, especially to there you don't want it resulting in bumps of material around the screwAripeka Angler wrote: ↑Tue Mar 24, 2020 10:13 pm Good stuff Peter.
