Shoebox Hatches

Post by fallguy1000 »

Okay, guys. Want to throw darts at the Fallguy (me)? Here is your chance to throw darts and help me with my damned stall and insanity.

I created this shoebox coaming and hatch lid. I sort of used what I had and the lid is heavy and not glassed. Made from aquaplas which dents easily sans glass.

The damn thing weighs 10.1 pounds with fillets inside; zero glass.

I have several options here.

1. Accept the lid at 10.1 pounds, and just paint the entire damn thing with kiwigrip.

2. Paint the edges white like all the hull verticals and kiwigrip the top.

3. Glass it with 6 oz fabric.

4. Make a new one from lighter materials.

5. Use this fat thing on each side until I break a finger or Mrs does and then make news ones.

6. I used some xtra 1" wide aquaplas on the sides; could cut the sides off and trade it for 1/2" foam core.

7. Radius all the bottom edges and save 0.0001 pounds.

8. Repeat #1.

Shots on me are acceptable. I am paralyzed with disgust at what I have done. The boat is likely coming in stern heavy and these are way forward, so I sort of did not care then, but kind of am bothered now.

I will trade barbs and shots for a shoebox lid tutorual after I determine hinges and latches.

If its too heavy, make it different/lighter.
If you think it would hurt your wife, make it different/lighter.

If you are ok with the weight and think it is safe, then go with it and keep marching on.

I'm with narfi with this. Why would you make it out of some heavy stuff?? Grab something lighter and rebuild. Use what you have as a template. Just thinking of the "ouch" factor if it slams down on my fingers.
Or...the other alternative is to keep it, glass it and add some type of hatch lift/shocks that don't cause it to slam down. Of course that's adding more complexity and added items.

I bought motorbox hinges today. Gonna use it as is, but probably modify it to lighter later. I have like 6000 little projects. Can't let them put me in 2022.

Well, I have a solution. The motor box hinges and these latche look great and function..okay.. the lid could still slam down and break fingers and is 10 friggin pounds. :(

Lockable latch just mocked up on wrong side for looks.

Stop “experimenting” with all these pretenders to lightweight throne and use the undefeated champion of all time - good old plywood!
