If it were my motor, I would change the complete water pump (impeller & housing). I would also replace the t-stat. Don't run without a t-stat, the OMC motors don't respond well to that.

I had a similar problem and decided to do the above. If you t-stat is like mine (which it probably isn't), I would remove it and run it on muff's for a while, then put in a new t-stat. That helps flush out anything that may be in there. Try blowing in the tell tail too. That gets rid of junk in there & helps the water flow out it.

I crossed the pumps and ours are the same. I will do
as you suggest and get the whole kit its only like 44
bucks so its a no brainer.

When you say blow in the tale tail are you talking
about the water outlet that the motor "pee's" from?

Also, any good way to remove any rubber from the
exhaust if the impeller has bits and parts in it? I have
a good feeling that once I take my foot off I wont find
too much of whats left of it?

Yup, the pisser. Blow backwards and that help get rid of any junk in there. Running without the t-stat may help get all that out (if there's anything in there). Compressed air may help also. It's more affective to blow backwards.

Do you have the same t-stat as mine? Mine is located at the top of the block with it's own little access cover. I don't have to take off the entire head cover to cahnge it. You can just remove the t-stat and run the motor on muffs. I had the same problem you did and that took care of it.

Not to change the subject, but have you done a compression test? You might want to just to confirm things are still good

A couple of reminders from some of the posts.
as Newt said, never run without water. You will fry the impeller in a heart beat.

We have the same 40 hp. I may replace my t-stat this winter, but it pumping plenty of water and the head stays cool - for now

I did have one interesting repair. One of the mount for the starter cracked and the started broke loose. I used some metlweld samples from S3 to bond a bolt into the hole then tightened it right back on - so far its held up well. I think it happens because the other two mounts were loose, allowing the starter to move.

these really are great little engines. What other motor can any guy with basic tools and skills do a complete turn up (replace water pump, replace lower unit oil, change plugs, change thermostat) all in less then 1 hour and for around $100

Old problem was the buzzer would go off. So, I checked the buzzer per forum suggestion. It was indeed hot. Then it was suggested that I check to see if the line was clogged, I did that. Still weak stream. Then it was suggested that it may be a t-stat. So I removed and replaced that. Then it was suggested that it was the water pump. That was removed and replaced.
Note: The old water pump looked as good as new, unknown when it was replaced.

I am still getting weak stream, the buzzer does not go off but I don't want to run it long enough for it to go off because of the weak water stream.

HELP PLEASE, I have run out of options. Also, I have blown with compressed air through the water passages inside the jacket. Also, no corrosion was found.

IF you just had the hose comin out of the motor and
not hooked to the fitting on the cowling how strong is
the stream? Its pumping and its steady, doesn't increase
with rpm just steady. Straight from the hose it doesn't
have enough pressure to poke a hole in the ground(dirt)


Maybe I can take a picture of the stream if that helps

I dont have the fitting, the hose comes right out of the cowling and the stream is steady and as big as 1/4" constant diameter, it pumps a lot of water.

Mine is like that also, doesn't have the reducer
(if thats what its called). I will take a photo, I have
it back apart today checking for clogs .

Well, I think I have her fixed.

In the end I took the foot off the motor a total of 5 times,
making sure I had the pump on correctly because I have
never done it before. After the install I still had weak pre-
ssure. I then checked the hose to see if it was stopped
up. It wasn't so I took out the old T-STAT and put it back
together. Still got weak pressure and overheated. So, I
cleaned my old tstat back in and had great pressure. This
made me think that I had a tstat prollem, so I ordered on
and a new water jacket housing.

Grandslam told me how to make a gasket and I made a
few of them out of a box while I was trouble shooting and
it worked like a champ.

So, today I put in a new T-stat and gasket it has a good
steady stream of water. No over heat but the jacket was
pretty hot to the touch. I am going to put new gear oil in
the foot tomorrow A.M. and put her on the house for 20
min or so and see what happens. Hope my prollems are
resolved, so I can have this motor for a while as a back
up for when I get GS old 70.

Thanks everyone who helped me out on this, it has given me
tons of confidence working on my own motor and being
able to fix minor problems and regular maintenance.
