Fuel Tank For My XF20>

Post by CatfishHunter »

Looking for a cheap 12-15 gal fuel tank for my xf20... I was wandering if this will work? http://moellermarine.com/moeller-marine ... nk-032513/ . I need something cheap and below deck for my tiller motor. so the fuel sending unit will be left unhooked. Thanks

I started out with the same sized tank in my XF20.
It wasn’t big enough, the range was less than 40 miles when the boat was loaded heavy.
I ended up putting a 50 under the bow deck.

Insufficient as AA says. Planing hulls are inefficient under hump speeds and you need a big enough burn rate to get them up and stay on plane.

Note: Moeller tanks are cheapest via Amazon based on my experiences.

I fish the area currently in a 24' wood tunnel skiff... never burnt over 12 gals on a trip with my old 2 smokes. doubt i'll burn more in a lighter shorter hull. As long as the moeller style tank like that will work i'll be fine. i might kick up to a 15 but no way im going to a 50 lol. It's funny the opinions you get on here because the other guy with a xf20 told me his 32 was to big

Is there any way you could ask your question where it makes sense that you want advice? You know the size of the space you are putting the tank in, you know the size of the tank. Are you asking if it will hold fuel? Be enough weight when full to trim the boat? Are you asking is that the cheapest price for it? You do not state the size of your tiller motor or how far the normal trips will be. Your question is not very clear but you some how get upset when you don't get the answer you want from the people that you are asking for help and then make insulting remarks about their advice.

Rule of thumb when boating is to use 1/3 of your fuel to get from A to B, that gives you 1/3 to get back to A and leaves you with 1/3 fuel remaining when you get back to A. Your next statement was "never burnt over 12 gals on a trip with my old 2 smokes". That statement says you would be close to empty when you return back to A and that is not much reserve for any issues. So with the few facts you gave with your question, my opinion is NO that tank will not work for your build.

I'm asking if that style of tank will work. not about the size or my fuel burn. I already know ive been fishing in the same area for 20 years and never burnt over 12 gals of gas. not looking for opinions on what the best tank is or what size i need just if this tank will work.

the OP was pretty clear if you read it again. I stated i need a 12-15 gallon tank and will this one work.

I think a lot of times people want a specific answer, but they get solid opinion beyond expectations.

Moeller tanks are good enough for me in two permanent below deck installs in my cat build. I have some reservations about the sending unit, so I am putting a 6" access plate above.

All plastic tanks require space for expansion. I am a little nervous my spacing is lacking...time will tell.

But account for expansion rules.

Your fuel tank sizing is your choice.

The portable plastic tanks last 10 years or more being outside and abused. I would think a tank out of the weather and not getting knocked around would last much longer.

I got no quarrel with anyone in this thread.
I was just giving you benefit of my experience with a smallish 13 gallon fuel tank in an XF20.
The poly tank will hold up fine, good choice.
I would hook up the fuel gauge, it’s easy.
My xf is a gas hog, very heavy fuel burn. 70 hp two stroke.
You most likely will never load it like this, but expect 1.5 mpg on plane.
This is the camping trip that made me put in a bigger tank and working fuel gauge.
Got less than 30 miles out of a full tank, good thing Capeman could bring me some rescue gas...
