So, I am trying to design a shorbox lid.
I found the problem is the hatch lid needs to clear the coaming, so the lid can't be too close.
So, I have a drawing. It highlights the engineering problem @lidpath.
The solution is to overside the lid, but then it is harder to seal, so I drew o-ring seals on both the coaming and lid edges.
Any comments are welcome. There are actually 5 places I need/want to use a shoebox lid design.
The damn picture is upside down!

Re: Shoebox hatch
I think I need to use a draw latch. A 90 degree one.

Still trying to find a way to latch this lid.
Disregard the ugliness; all temporary.

How about this on top latched into the inside of the inner sleeve?

Re: Shoebox hatch
How about a hinge like this that lifts the entire lid up and away from the lip?

Thanks. I built enough clearances for a regular hinge. I think? All I need is the latching. The boat has 3 of the gemlux AA showed.Rogerogrant wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2020 5:45 pm How about a hinge like this that lifts the entire lid up and away from the lip?

1. Use a hollow gasket. Surgical tubing works well 1/4" OD. Make a shallow groove and glue it in with contact cement
2. Yes, you need a gap to allow it to open. I sailed about 1/4 way around the world with hatches that were held in place with... gravity.
Eventually I used a HORIZONTAL hole with a nut epoxied into the inner lip, and a bolt through the outer hatch to hold it closed. Ugly and simple. You had to sit on the hatch to compress the gasket so the holes lined up.
