I have a 1975 MG midget. When it needs work I take it to any mechanic and, unless some obscure part is needed, they can fix it (unless they have never worked on non-efi ICE). I have a 2008 Toyota. 2 of my MG guys can't get one thing fixed because "generic readers can't get that code". Mt 2014 volt... Can't get the oil changes without going to the dealer for an ECU field toggle that is protected (took it to a place that changed the oil, took my money then said "you need to go to the chevy dealer to have the oil changed code reset; this place was provided by Chevy as a good place to go FOR THIS CAR).OneWayTraffic wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 5:12 pm I'd still prefer an expert, which is more likely to be the licensed dealer.
Basically they ICE we are stuck with today are becoming "service income generators" for manufacturers. HP did this with printers. Xerox tried it as well. You see the wonderful result of this when you realize that it is cheaper to buy a new printer than it is to buy replacement cartridges. I'm starting to wonder if there is any "self maintenance" future for ICE. There never will be a self maintenance for e-motors (which is why I'm more likely to build my own).
