Insuring old boats -- not with Geico

Geico îs no longer willing to ensure boats that are more than 39yr old. If your title shows a manufacture date of 40yr they will refuse to write policy. That's a bit of a testicular kick for affordable sailing.

That said, anyone have an "old boat" that is ensured? If so, who is the policy writer?

My 83 c&c is with progressive. Do you have to insure it or is it a preference? I tend to insure everything but am starting to question that wisdom lately.

See if you can get ahold of Heritage in Conneticut.

When I have time, I will look for their contact info. They are a broker. Be warned.

Marina and environmental requirements (for some areas we want to go). There are some local horror stories of boats on anchor getting pulled into oysters that result in couple hundred thousand environmental fees (state and fed).

I appreciate that.

Take a look at Hagerty Marine Insurance. I have a 1943 woodie and a 1963 Boston Whaler that they're delighted to insure. For a fee, of course. The company specializes in "classic and antique" boats. I don't know how they define "classic and antique", but it's probably worth an inquiry.

Hagerty is the go to for the old car world. I’ll have to look them up. Thanks for the reminder.

Progressive will issue a policy on line!

Need to call them though.
1. Liability limit too low to meet marina requirements.
2. Excludes “named storms”.
3. Has lots of stuff already covered or not applicable.

Off the site it looks like $650/yr. The PO policy from Geico was $238/yr. Seems like old boat economy is going rot take a hit in the coming years.

How hard is it to pull your boat? The 'named storm' exclusion...is that excluding liability or just covering your losses?

Requires crane/lift. No trailer. Only 2 lifts local. Multi month waiting list. Next closest lifts are Sav and CHS. Long waits there and the are known to refuse boats not part of local marinas durning storms. My hurricane plan is a mooring ball at my marina.

As I read it, NO coverage for named storms. Although they do provide reimbursement for haulout. I need environmental coverage for named storms at a minimum.

Up until six months ago I had a sailboat built in 1972/1975. My insurance was through a local SD broker with Markel American.

Landed with progressive. Everyone else wanted unneeded inspections (cost more than the actual boat) or huge prices. Progressive age cutoff is currently built prior to 1965.

I really wanted an old herschoff but not sure I’ll ever be able to get one based just on insurance issues.
