YMCA cardboard boat race

Post by Matt Gent »

A buddy sent me the ad for this event; lo and behold there’s a BBC banner on the bottom of it!

So learn me some cardboard boat building. I’m pressed for time but my son would love this.

Best cardboard to use? Where to get it? Long sheets would be nice to work with.

Rules just say use cardboard, duct tape, and paint. I guess it’s for two people, so 170+45lb of load.

Maybe a 5 panel dory? Or a 3 panel canoe with some reinforcement on the bottom.

I did a few cardboard boat races when I livednin Illinois. the best one was a kayak/canoe boat, although I think the fs13 would probably make a great one. we would always run into issues when the board would get floppy where you were sitting and the tiniest bit of water gets in and next thing you know you are sitting on the bottom. i wonder if you painted the cardboard before the seams were covered in ducktape if that would help. as the ducktape is first to fail. then paint the seam again after.
