I have noticed it seems like most of the original Hickman sea sleds have sides that are close to vertical while most of the non Hickman designs flare out in the sides. Why is this or am I just seeing things wrong?

Hickman's designs evolved over time.
One important change in his last designs, was the slanted chine to prevent chine tripping.
